Why it matters. Hyundai Motor Group is now one of the world's largest automakers, so U.S. industry recognition of its technology signals how seriously it is competing with American, European, and Japanese rivals on EVs and software.

Background. Hyundai Motor Group is South Korea's biggest carmaker and the parent of the Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis brands. Over the past decade it has shifted from a budget-friendly image to a technology and design leader, and South Korea broadly treats its global automotive and tech success as a point of national pride. The award's renaming from 'Manufacturer' to 'Company' of the Year reflects an industry-wide pivot toward software and connectivity as the new competitive battleground.

What to watch next. Watch whether Hyundai's push into software-defined vehicles and 800-volt EV charging translates into stronger U.S. and global sales against Tesla and legacy automakers.

Hyundai Motor Group, South Korea’s largest carmaker, was named Auto Company of the Year at the AutoTech Awards 2026, held on June 2 (local time) in Novi, Michigan. The win marks the first time the group as a whole has taken the program’s top prize, the company announced on June 4.

What the AutoTech Awards Recognize

The AutoTech Awards are organized by Informa, a global information and communications technology (ICT) research firm. The program honors innovative technologies and companies across the automotive and mobility sector, spanning artificial intelligence, connectivity, software, safety, and the broader connected-car ecosystem. This year’s ceremony was held alongside the “Wards 10 Best Interiors & UX” awards run by Wards Auto, a respected U.S. automotive trade publication.

The honor itself was rebranded for 2026. What had been called “Auto Manufacturer of the Year” through last year was renamed “Auto Company of the Year” — a shift the organizers say reflects how automakers now compete as much on software and digital ecosystems as on building vehicles.

A First for the Group

While Hyundai’s U.S. arm had previously won the “Auto Manufacturer of the Year” title in 2021 and 2024, this is the first time the recognition has gone to the group as a whole — a corporate umbrella that includes the Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis brands.

Judges pointed to several factors behind the selection. Chief among them was Hyundai’s streak of winning the World Car of the Year award three years running. The panel also praised the group’s dedicated electric-vehicle (EV) platform, its 800-volt ultra-fast charging system, and a track record of safety and design accolades — including top-tier “Top Safety Pick+” ratings from the U.S. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and multiple international design prizes.

Where Hyundai Is Heading

In a statement, Hyundai Motor Group said it plans to keep strengthening its EV platform performance, safety standards, and design, while accelerating its transition toward the software-defined vehicle (SDV) — a car whose features are managed and updated largely through software, much like a smartphone. The group added that it intends to expand its connected-mobility capabilities in global markets.

The award lands as Hyundai cements a reputation it has built rapidly over the past decade, moving from a value-focused brand into a serious contender on technology, electrification, and design against established American, European, and Japanese rivals.
